Physical education starts in EYFS and continues throughout the school.
Reception – Y6 use Get Set for PE to support the teaching and planning of PE.

- Children will be taught in a safe and supportive environment, that is essential to ensure children attain optimum physical and emotional development and good health.
- Children will be taught skills to keep them safe such as being able to swim, how to co-operate and collaborate with others as part of an effective team, and understanding fairness and equity of play which will embed life-long values.
- Children will develop PE related vocabulary.

Implementation
Nursery
In Nursery, children build their gross motor skills every day through fun and active play. They develop coordination, balance, and movement by using the outdoor equipment and exploring different ways to move, such as climbing, jumping, balancing, and crawling. Outdoor games and activities also help to develop their spatial awareness.
We begin to introduce early ball skills, giving children opportunities to practise throwing, catching, and kicking in a relaxed and enjoyable way. Their muscles are strengthened through engaging activities like Squiggle While You Wiggle, as well as parachute and circle games.
Children also take part in a variety of hands-on activities each day, including painting, sweeping, den building, and digging. All of these experiences help to build coordination and support their growing muscle control.
Reception
Reception continue to build on from Nursery with similar activities.
Reception also have a stand-alone 1-hour PE lesson, where the children are taught to refine their basic gross motor skills, such as balance, coordination, movement, jumping and ball skills and they are taught techniques to help develop these skills further.
KS1
Children in KS1 continue to develop the skills learnt in EYFS. They are taught a range of sports to continue to develop their gross motor, fitness and team building skill further. They then start to use these skills in more defined areas to help prepare them for different sports, such as invasion, ball skill, net and wall, striking and fielding games as well as dance, gymnastics and athletics.
KS2
In KS2 the children use the skills and knowledge they have learnt so far and start to apply them into different sports/games.
Children in KS2 go swimming and will complete a full years worth of swimming during their time at Caldmore.
The curriculum has been designed to ensure a range of different sports are being taught which are using different skills. Team games that include; invasion (Football, Netball, tag rugby, handball), Striking and fielding (rounders, cricket), net and wall (tennis and Badminton) as well as individual sports such as gymnastics, dance and athletics.

- equipment, changing what is being used,
- the task, changing rules, roles, progressions, conditions, complexity,
- People; changing groupings or how the children play together.
Preparing the children for the future
As well as teaching the children the core concepts that underpin our curriculum. We also teach the children to develop a love of sport/exercise. Helping to improve their fitness, health and well-being and helping them to understand the importance of these to maintain a healthy life style in the future. Teamwork is another skill that sport can help prepare the children for the future, as this ability to work with others and in a team is transferred into all areas of life.
How PE links to other subjects
PSHE- taking turns, sharing, encouraging others, working together, resilience, winning and losing, following rules, keeping healthy, impact on mental health.
Geography- Orienteering, map skills (Outdoor activities)

Impact
We help motivate children to participate in a variety of sports through quality teaching that is engaging and fun. From our lessons, our children learn to take responsibility for their own health and fitness, many of whom also enjoy the success of competitive sports. We equip our children with the necessary skills and a love for sport that will help them to grow up to live happy and healthy lives utilising the skills and knowledge acquired through PE.
