At Caldmore Primary Academy, all children will develop, first hand, their confidence creativity and enthusiasm for learning by creating a wide range of structures, mechanisms, textile and food products. We hope this will inspire them to become engineers, designers, chefs or architects of the future.
EYFS
By using a variety of materials, tools and techniques, children will experiment with colour, design, texture, form and function. They will also use props when role playing characters in stories and develop their speech and language skills.
Design
- Independently explore different materials and develop ideas about how to use them and what to make.
Make
- Make imaginative and complex ‘small worlds’ with blocks and construction kits.
- Use shapes to represent objects.
- Safely use a variety of materials, tools and techniques.
- Experiment with colour.
Evaluate
- Share what they have made with peers and adults, explaining the process they have used.
Key Stage 1
Through a variety of practical and creative lessons, children will be taught the knowledge, understanding and skills needed to participate successfully in an increasingly technological world.
When designing and making, pupils should be taught to:
Design
- Select the appropriate tool for a simple practical task.
- Design a greetings card with a lever.
- Identify and design a healthy sandwich.
Make
- Select the appropriate tool for a simple practical task.
- Prepare food to eat, peel, grate and mash.
- Make a greetings card.
Evaluate
- Explore and evaluate a range of existing products.
- Evaluate their ideas and products.
Technical Knowledge
- Explore different types of machines and their purpose, which parts move and how they are powered.
- Explore slide mechanisms and how they move in straight lines.
Key Stage 2
Through a variety of practical and creative lessons, children will be taught the knowledge, understanding and skills needed to participate successfully in an increasingly technological world.
When designing and making, pupils should be taught to:
Design
- Design a range of products (jewellery, healthy snacks, packages etc) using a design criteria.
- Plan to use a pneumatic mechanical system in a product.
- Experiment with expressionism in portraiture.
Make
- Create expressionism in portraiture.
- Add text to a photographic background.
- Make a healthy snack.
Evaluate
- Investigate and analyse a range of existing products
- Evaluate their ideas and products against a design criteria.
- Consider the views of others to improve their work
- Understand how key events and individuals in design and technology have helped shape the world
Technical knowledge
- Children will regularly test their prototype, evaluate its success and make changes to their design until they are ready to make their product.
