Intent

  • Learning Latin at Caldmore will provide children with the foundation for learning languages in preparation for KS3 curriculum.
  • Latin will provide the children with a linguistic foundation for reading comprehension and an appreciation of classical civilisation. The children will discuss what they have learnt in English.
  • Children will have fun whilst learning the language to foster a love of languages.

Implementation

In our school we support the view that learning a modern foreign language or ancient language is an entitlement for all pupils during their time in Key Stage 2.

At Caldmore we teach Latin to children from year 3 to year 6.

We aim to make the lessons as interesting and enjoyable as possible, as this approach serves to develop a positive attitude in the children to the learning of a modern foreign language. Children are taught Latin through Maximum Classics for Schools.

We use a variety of techniques to encourage the children to engage actively in Latin including games, engaging with the history of language and culture and exploring where words come from in English. Over 60% of the words we use come from Latin and Greek origins and is the foundation of many other European languages.

Impact

Our pupils enjoy learning the meaning behind many of the root words that we use in English today.

  • We like learning something new.
  • Latin helps us understand new words in English.
