We use Read Write Inc (RWI) to teach the children to read and write.
We teach the children the sounds and then use these to blend together to read words.
Intent
Our pupils learn to read and spell effectively using the Read Write Inc. (RWI) Phonics
The aim of our phonic instruction is to equip children with the ability to decode words and understand the relationship between letters and their corresponding sounds, allowing them to read fluently and accurately, ultimately fostering a love of reading by enabling them to access a wide range of text independently: the vision is to create a classroom where every child feels confident and capable in decoding words, building a strong foundation for life long literacy skills.
We want all pupils to begin their journey to read with confidence, develop a love of reading and apply their reading skills to writing.
We aim to ensure that all pupils:
- Learn all 44 phonemes in the English language and learn to read and write all the graphemes that represent them
- apply their phoneme knowledge to blend sounds into words.
- read common exception words on sight.
- understand what they read.
- read aloud with fluency and expression.
- learn letter formation and handwriting skills.
- spell quickly and easily by segmenting the sounds in words

What is RWI?
How do I say the sounds?
This video will help you to say the sounds correctly.
The children start to learn these sounds in Nursery.
When the children start Reception, the children continue to learn set 1 sounds and learn to blend these sounds together, beginning to read simple words.
Year 1 and 2 are spilt into small groups, working at the correct stage in their reading. Children are assessed every half term to ensure they are working at the right level for them. Reception join Year 1 and 2 after October half term.
Along side teaching the sounds, the children are taught to read words.
These are spilt into 2 groups
Green words
These are words where sounds can be blended together to read the words.

Red words
These are sight words, where the children have to learn to read them by sight. The sounds don’t work.
